Bugs in the Backyard is a spectacular collection of the weird and wonderful world of backyard creepy crawlies. There are all kinds of bugs lurking just outside the house. Large, vibrant illustrations give readers a close-up peek at these alien-like beasties. Stunning images from scanning electron microscopes give a close-up view of incredible minibeasts, revealing every hair on the back of a flea, the beautiful scales on a moth's wing, and the amazing compound eye of a fly. Kids will discover what a fly likes to eat and how it digests its food or how a pond skater can skim across the surface of water. They will learn how a colony of ants communicates, and find out if their garden might be home to the fastest beetle in the world. An authoritative collection, suitable for home or school.

Warning--this book contains top-secret information about butterflies! Prepare to be shocked and grossed out by this hilarious and totally true picture book introduction to a fascinating insect. Butterflies are beautiful and quiet and gentle and sparkly . . . but that's not the whole truth. Butterflies can be GROSS. And one butterfly in particular is here to let everyone know! Talking directly to the reader, a monarch butterfly reveals how its kind is so much more than what we think. Did you know some butterflies enjoy feasting on dead animals, rotten fruit, tears and even poop? Some butterflies are loud, like the Cracker butterfly. Some are stinky -- the smell scares predators away. Butterflies can be sneaky, like the ones who pretend to be ants to get free babysitting. This hilarious and refreshing book with silly and sweet illustrations explores the science of butterflies and shows that these insects are not the stereotypically cutesy critters we often think they are -- they are fascinating, disgusting, complicated and amazing creatures.

Designed for kids doing research and those wanting a ready source of creepy information, Buzz off, Flies! offers information on life cycles, family trees, and the fly's unique relationship with humans. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-5-Profusely illustrated overviews profile a gaggle of infamous pests. In each one, short paragraphs of lively text cover essential information about the featured animals: distinctive physical and behavioral characteristics of particular groups/species, classification, basic anatomy, feeding habits, habitats, etc.; outline their evolution and historical relationship to humans; and offer tips to prevent infestations and for knowing what to do when they occur. Each title also includes sections with movie and literary trivia, idioms, and so on, tied to the animals and intriguing miscellaneous facts. (For instance, cockroaches can survive 12 to 15 times the amount of radiation humans can endure.) Color photographs complement the text on almost every page. Life cycle diagrams are also included. A few of the photos in these sections are just for laughs (e.g., a man cringes beneath a giant cockroach; a startled woman looks into the compound eyes of an enormous fly). Small silhouettes of the animals, massed together, decorate the page corners. These broad, entertaining books will be good companion volumes for more detailed introductions on some of the same creatures, such as Shelley Bueche's Bedbugs (Gale, 2005) and Sophie Lockwood's Flies (The Child's World, 2007).-Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. There are 20,000 species of butterflies in the world, but only several dozen are found on the tundra of the North American Arctic. Many Arctic animals have warm, woolly coats, downy feathers, or thick layers of blubber, and Arctic butterflies appear fragile with their fluttering, delicate wings. Yet the hardy butterflies that live at the top of the world have many clever ways to keep themselves warm in cool summers and endure icy-cold winters. In A Children’s Guide to Arctic Butterflies, young readers learn about twelve of the butterflies that call the Arctic home and how they survive on the tundra from one season to the next.   With a simple layout and easy-to-follow headings for each butterfly, this beautiful book is filled with fun, useful facts, including introductory material about the life cycle and anatomy of butterflies and how they begin life as caterpillars. Step inside and journey North—you may even spot a familiar fluttering friend. While some of the butterflies found in A Children’s Guide to Arctic Butterflies are among the most northern of butterfly species, many can also be found south of the Arctic and in high, cold places around the world!
