A STEM introduction to migration through one bird's quest to find its winter home When Sammy, a young Wilson's warbler, wakes up one frosty August morning near the Arctic Circle, he instinctively knows that it's time to make his first migratory journey south to Panama. But there's one problem -- where is Panama? All the other warblers having left without him, Sammy sets off on the journey by himself, stopping to ask the same question of each of the different animals that he meets along the way: "Is this Panama?" From the caribou heading to his winter forest to the monarch butterflies flitting to Mexico, every animal has a different destination -- and different advice for Sammy on how to find his way. Finally, a flock of his warbler cousins shows Sammy that finding Panama is as easy as following the stars. Animal migration patterns and seasonal changes are on display throughout this fascinating story, complemented by intricate paper collage, watercolor, and pen-and-ink illustrations.

Three birds are left behind when they decide they can't be bothered to fly south with their flock. But, despite their laziness, the birds are willing to put a lot of effort into beating the winter cold. The birds problem-solve and do everything they can think of to stay warm--trying (and failing at) everything from wearing winter coats like humans to living in the water like fish. When the three birds finally decide it's even more work to stay warm in the winter than it is to fly south, they start their journey to join the other birds. But when they arrive, they only get to enjoy the warmth for a fleeting moment before the flock announces it's time to migrate north again!

Over the cold, mirrored waters of the Arctic, a tiny tern sets off on the world's longest animal migration. On her way, she passes humpback whales, caribou, Canada geese, leatherback turtles, and monarch butterflies, each on their own incredible journey south for winter. When the Arctic tern finally arrives, she must find a new home on the Antarctic shore . . . until it's time to return to the northern skies once again.
